Square Enix recently announced a port for Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will be coming to Nintendo 3DS.
They have shared with us a first look at some screenshots of the game, in addition to a few detail about some of the new features of the upcoming 3DS version.
As far as worldview and story goes not much as changed from the Playstation 2 version of the game, but the 3DS version has a few enhancements and additions over that release. For example, the music is fully orchestrated by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
Additionally, Dragon Quest VIII is the first game in the main-numbered series with voiced cutscenes and this will be added to all the events in the game this time around.
The game will also make Red and Morrie playable, two key characters that previously appeared in the PlayStation 2 version.
With the addition of these two new characters, there will be several new story bits added to the game surrounding them.
Moreover, some of the new scenarios include one that focuses on the jester Dhoulmagus and another one that centers around the childhood of the protagonist.
Finally, Dragon Quest VIII will also add some StreetPass features, which are said to be unique, but we’ll only find out more about it in a later report about the game.
In addition, due to the 29th anniversary of the series on the past day of May 26th, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii shared the following message with fans:
“Everyone, thank you for the congratulations on Dragon Quest’s 29th. Next year, we’re finally approaching the 30th anniversary. I think we’ll be able to make various announcements in the near future, so please look forward to them.”
Meanwhile, Square Enix’s Ryutaro Ichimura also had this to say:
“Today, May 27, is Dragon Quest’s birthday! Already 29! Congratulations! As for next year, we’re welcoming the 30th anniversary! Celebrate! We’re going to have a grand celebration next year!”

Dragon Quest VIII is set for release in Japan on August 27, 2015.
