Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3
It’s almost time for Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 to release in Japan, but that didn’t stop Square Enix from sharing a lot of information about the title once again, during the week.
Here’s a roundup of the new information and screenshots, adapted from Gematsu:
Master’s Road
– Is an action mini-game, where you have to get to the goal while running through frequent traps and approaching monsters, while using your monster’s ride techniques.
– Master’s Road can be found all over, however, their entrances are not displayed on the map, but rather hidden for you to find on your own in locations you might not normally step foot in.
– An item called the “Heaven Guide Stone” is the key to Master’s Road.
– Monsters will be wandering about and some of them will block your way as if they’re protectors of the path.
– Blazing fires, rotating floors and other contraptions will block your way.
– You’ll have to switch out the monsters you’re riding to move forward.
– If you fall off the map due to an an unforeseen circumstance, you’ll have to start again from the beginning.
Gates to Different Dimensions
– In Break World, only with your Reactor can you find gates leading to another dimension.
– Through these gates that cross space and time, you will encounter the monster masters of a different world, unexpected monsters, and other surprises.
– There are powerful monsters wandering about the different world, so make your preparations after discovering a gate and then jump in.
– After jumping into the rip in space-time, you’ll see an environment unlike what you’ve seen before, so you’re encouraged to search every corner.
– You’ll sometimes encounter masters outside of the protagonist, which you can defeat for items that will help you on your adventure.
Super Vital Synthesis
– With the new synthesis method called “Super Vital Synthesis”, the combined monster’s strength-denoting Rank instantly rises to SS.
– The characteristics held by the original monsters can also be inherited by the newly born monster.
– For example, Super Vital Synthesizing a mimic (normal body, Absorb Magic, fast action) with a dragon slime (small body, Parameter Break, glance up) creates an SS-Rank Lumbering Machine that inherits the “fast action” of his parent, allowing him to attack before enemies.
– You can decide which size the child monster takes in a Super Vital Synthesis.
– For example, you can create a compact-size Dragonlord to ride around.
Take to the Heavens
– By riding on a giant monster, you can fly around freely in the sky, where you can find previously unseen monsters and lands.
– In the sky fields, you can ride any monster if it’s big enough.
– That said, you can size them up via Super Vital Synthesis and fly through the sky on your favorite monsters.

Bravely Second: End Layer
Nintendo Life recently managed to obtain a statement from Nintendo regarding the censored sidequest options in the European version of Bravely Second: End Layer. In its response, Nintendo noted that Bravely Second’s developers believed that this modification would be appropriate based on “overwhelming feedback” coming from Japanese players. Users in Japan “felt an unsatisfying disconnect between their intentions and the characters’ reactions” as “each side quest would end with the team lamenting the decision they made, regardless of the player’s decision”.
You can read up on Nintendo’s full statement below.
Regarding changes made to Bravely Second: End Layer for worldwide release
Based on feedback received after Bravely Second: End Layer’s release in Japan, the development team at Square Enix, in conjunction with Silicon Studio, decided to implement a number of revisions to the game for the purpose of improving its quality and creating a more enjoyable product.
One such change affects the game’s optional side quests, where players encounter a conflict between two opposing parties and choose which party to side with.
When the game was released in Japan, each side quest would end with the team lamenting the decision they made, regardless of the player’s decision. This was intended to help players empathise with the characters’ situation, but overwhelming feedback from players indicated that they felt an unsatisfying disconnect between their intentions and the characters’ reactions. In response, these side quest endings were amended to show the party readily coming to terms with their actions in a manner that does not cause the player undue regret for their decisions.
These changes do not affect the gameplay or the course of events in the game, and were made with the intention of improving the game experience for players.
Monster Hunter Generations
Capcom recently held its second Monster Hunter Generations live stream. In it, footage from the game was shown, and Capcom revealed the English name for Hororohoruru, Malfestio. You can watch it below:
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
During GDC 2016, Capcom localization director Andrew Alfonso delivered a talk on adapting games for worldwide audiences, with a portion of his presentation focused on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Polygon made an article on it, and it’s a pretty interesting read. You can find it here. He spoke about the ways in which he and the team approached the English version, including staying away from memes.
Alfonso said:
“I started thinking that I don’t want people picking up my games on release saying, ‘I like these in-style meme references,’ and then another player picking up the games four years later and thinking, ‘They referenced 300 — that sucks!’”
Several other ideas were considered to help Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate become a success in the west, including an entertaining script and localization tweaks, overhauling loading screens so that players would be shown hints rather than bland data, cutting down on the tutorial quests, and providing a demo to help introduce new users to Monster Hunter’s complicated weapon set.
Capcom’s higher-ups in Japan didn’t follow through on all of Alfonso’s ideas right away, since the company “emphasized the importance of staying on schedule and under budget”. However, Alfonso conducted research to better understand “the differences in business practices and communication between Western and Eastern companies”. In the process, he learned that the Japanese Monster Hunter demographic is quite a bit younger compared to fans in America.
This research eventually lead to several localization changes. The script was tightened as the dialogue was cut down, and beginner tutorials can be skipped. New optional text to guide beginners without disrupting veteran players was accepted by Capcom’s leaders in Japan, which was even added to the Japanese version.
All in all, a nice example of how localization should be made when two sides of a company listen to each other, and ignore useless memes.

In the city where Don-chan and Kacchan live, a museum that showcases the wonders of the world has opened. The pair are invited to the museum as its special first-time customers, and encounter a girl with a mysterious atmosphere named Tia and a mysterious creature named Popokaka. Dragon Ball: Project Fusion
The latest issue of V Jump has another update on Dragon Ball: Project Fusion, with new information about some of the fusions that can be found in the game.
The magazine introduces three new fusions: Pirilin (Piccolo x Krillin), Gorilin (kid Goku × Krilin), and Krigohan (Krillin x kid Gohan). Pirilin (some also calling it Prilin) looks to be a standard fusion, whereas the other two are more unique. Gorilin and Krigohan use EX Fusion through a special arm band/bracelet created by Capsule Corp, which allows two people of different strength to merge.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice
Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice was originally on track to release last holiday. However, SEGA delayed the game last September, saying this was done “to make sure the game has the time and polish needed”.
During a panel a SXSW, SEGA finally revealed that Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is now scheduled to launch worldwide on September 27 for the 3DS.
Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary
During the same SXSW panel, a Sonic 25th Anniversary party was announced.
This event to to held by SEGA is set to take place on July 22 in San Diego. Tickets can now be purchased here.
Here’s an overview of what fans can expect from the event:
If you’re a Sonic fan, this should be the party to go to. The event will have “very special announcements,” and SEGA’s Aaron Webber also teased: “… if you are looking forward to a game announcement, I’m not saying there’s going to be a game announcement at this party, but you should totally come to this party.”
Celebrate 25 years of Sonic the Hedgehog at our official party at the House of Blues, during San Diego Comic-con! Special guests, musical performances by Crush 40 and Hyper Potions, exclusive 25th Anniversary merchandise and more await!
Food is provided by the venue, and your ticket price also covers limited edition merchandise we’ll be giving away at the show.
Join us as we celebrate the past, and give you the exclusive first look at the future of Sonic!
During the panel, a specific session also looked back upon some of the franchise’s more notable installments as well as Sonic’s appearance in other games, including the Mario & Sonic sports series.
Yuji Naka, one of the creators of Sonic, talked about those initial conversations with Nintendo:
“So yes it is true. Back in the day I did go to Kyoto to visit Nintendo and wanted to have a meeting with Mr. Miyamoto and figure out could we make a game maybe with Mario and Sonic together. Although those original conversations happened about three years before the Olympics game came out, we weren’t able to really make a game that featured Sonic and Mario back from that original conversation, but because we had those conversations, it kind of kicked off future conversations with Nintendo which afterwards led to the Olympic game coming out.”
After these comments, SEGA’s Aaron Webber asked if it’s because of Naka that we have Sonic in Smash. In response, Naka noted the following:
“The original Sonic becoming a part of the Smash Bros. game was also part of that conversation. During the GameCube development for Smash Bros., he really wanted to get Sonic into that game, but it was just too late in the development process and couldn’t get it in for GameCube, but they did move forward and put Sonic in for the Wii version.”
Yo-kai Watch
MCV recently spoke with Nintendo UK product manager Remy Van Leeuwen about the Yo-kai Watch series and its upcoming debut in the European territory.
Van Leeuwen discussed Yo-kai Watch’s potential in the west, and how The Yo-kai themselves, their emotional abilities, and the comedy aspect could all help them connect with kids and make it a success.
They also discuss the franchise’s success in Japan, and make comparisons to the Pokémon formula and how Yo-kai watch differs from those games.
Curiously, Van Leeuwen also mentions how the 3DS still has a big life ahead of it, even though he doesn’t specify how long it really is.
You can find the interview over here, and should probably give it a read, since it’s relatively interesting in a franchise marketing sense.
Zero Time Dilemma
More information about Zero Time Dilemma keeps pouring in.
Spike Chunsoft has recently opened the official Japanese Zero Time Dilemma website, and you can access it here.
The game has been scheduled to release on June 30 in Japan, and June 28 in North America and Europe, with dual audio support.
Gematsu and Kotaku had new information on the game during the week, so I rounded up the new details below.
Prologue
December 31, 2028—Nevada desert.
It was six days since the start of cohabitation in the experimental facility Dcom.
That day, they woke up, and nine men and women were in confinement.
On my left wrist was a black bracelet I’d never seen before—a bangle.
Then a person wearing a mask showed up, and announced the start of the the Decision game.
“The survival of all of you, me, and the human race hangs on this game.”
After that, they were transported to an underground shelter, and divided and admitted into three sections—C, Q, and D.
Which team will survive?
The future of all humanity—all eight billion people—rests on their Decision.
About
– Adventure/escape game where nine characters have been imprisoned by the mysterious character “Zero”.
– The nine characters are divided in groups of three, in three sections of the nuclear bomb sheltrt, and escaping from the facility requires figuring out six passwords for the central elevator hall.
– A password is revealed whenever a person dies, which poses the question if the player will kill the other teams to get all the passwords or find another way.
Cinema Part
– During certain “Cinema Parts”, characters will have conversations without text boxes.
– These are fully voiced and try to create a sense of reality similar to a movie or foreign drama.
Characters
– Carlos (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita), the protagonist and a hot-blooded firefighter with a strong sense of justice. He has rescued many lives before. He is always doting on his younger sister, who has an incurable disease.
– Akane (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro), a neat and clean, ideal Japanese woman, or so she pretends to be. She is actually a shrewd woman skilled in trickery. She presides over a secret society working towards a peaceful future.
– Junpei (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki), a childhood friend of Akane. After the incident one year prior, he joined a detective agency through the underside of society in order to pursue Akane, who has not been heard from since. He has since become hard-hearted.
– Q (voiced by Aki Toyosaki), a boy who lost his memory and does not know what kind of person he is. He wears a strange, spherical helmet for some reason. He is naive and kind.
– Eric (voiced by Akira Ishida), an ice cream shop clerk. He is naturally cheerful, but has a temper as soon as he falls into a crisis. He is in a relationship with Mira.
– Mira (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto), a woman who brings about a dubious charm. She doesn’t show too much emotion, but her reasoning seems to be that she’s “just insensitive”.
Team D:
– Diana (voiced by Mamiko Noto), a bright, gentle nurse. She is a pacifist who dislikes fighting and always has a kind smile on her face. She participates in the experiment after a recommendation from her boss.
– Phi (voiced by Chiaki Omigawa), a cool, intellectual woman with a blunt way of speaking. She participates in the Dcom experiment together with Akane and Sigma in order to save the world.
– Sigma (voiced by Daisuke Ono), his body is 22 years-old, but because he’s led a complicated and mysterious life, his mind is that of a 67 year-old man’s. Phi sometimes knocks him as an “old man”.
Other:
– Zero (voiced by ???), the mastermind behind the Decision game. What are the expectations behind his plan?
– Gabu, an old male dog. He can pass through vents impassable by humans, and is the only character able to go to and from each section of the facility. The characters of the story attach cased messages to Gabu’s collar in attempts to communicate with the teams of the other sections…
General
– You can switch between English and Japanese audio at will.
– Set in the mysterious Mars testing facility where “things happened”.
– Presumably takes place directly after Virtue’s Last Reward, even though it’s set decades in the past. If you’ve played the games, you’ll get it.
– You can switch between the character teams as you play through the story.
– Story will be told through cinematics and all of the dialogue will be voiced, so you can play without reading.
– The team is trying to make it as accessible as possible to people who haven’t played the first two games.
– Every 90 minutes, a drug is injected from the watches every character is wearing and that causes them to wake up and lose all their memories.
– The story can be played out of chronological order thanks to this mechanic, so you can start from a “floating fragment” screen that shows you the various scenes in the story and choose one.
– As you complete each fragment, you’ll see how they fit into a larger narrative chart that you can uncover as you play.
– The characters don’t know where they are in the timeline, and neither does the player.
– When you complete a segment it goes into the larger decision tree, and this tells you where it actually happens in the story.
– Zero will make your characters try to kill one another, and the game tries its best to mess with both the player and the characters as much as possible.
Demo details
– Begins with Sigma locked to a chair while Zero monologues at him.
– Phi is next to him locked inside an incinerator.
– Diana stands between them and has to make the choice.
– Cut-scenes are in 3D, with a moving camera and actual in-game objects.
– The gun next to Sigma’s chair has 3 live rounds and three blanks.
– If Diana pulls the trigger it’ll shut down the incinerator whether or not the bullet is live, but she has a 50/50 chance of killing Sigma.
– In 3 minutes, the incinerator will start and kill Phi. If Diana pulls the trigger, the door will open but Sigma has a 50/50 chance of dying.
– They decided to pull the trigger, but didn’t know what would happen, since it’s completely random what happens and the game calculates the odds each time.
– In this case, the bullet is a blank, Sigma lives and Phi is also saved from the incinerator.
– Some of the choices throughout the game will be random like that.
– They ran the scene again and this time Sigma died from a live bullet. They swear it really is random.
You can find the Japanese and English trailers below, followed by a batch of screenshots from the game.
